Although you might be jumping on the bandwagon and drinking trendy teas, there’s a down side too. Most commercial teas are sweetened. Even if they are sweetened with organic cane juice, it’s loaded with sugar all the same. That’s also true of agave syrup, which raises your blood sugar as much as sugar does. And, when blood sugar is elevated, that’s when weight gain occurs. Many people drink these beverages between meals, when there’s no fat or protein from a meal to attenuate the sugar rush. Then, they wonder why they are hungry a couple hours later when the sugar crash leaves them in a lurch. So ditch the trend and go for unsweetened teas. You’ll get the subtle stimulation of the caffeine, and the anti-aging powers of the antioxidants without the weight gain associated with the sugar.

Many people are grabbing healthy beverages like green tea. Tea contains about 1/3 of the caffeine as coffee, so it’s great for a pick-me-up. But, it also contains other compounds that regulate the caffeine, decreasing the crash that follows a caffeine high from coffee. It also contains antioxidants. In fact, green tea was found to decrease risk of breast cancer. It’s also good for a healthy liver, and that means a healthy hormonal balance. Black tea also contains powerful antioxidants. Because of the caffeine, many doctors recommend drinking a glass of water with your tea, as caffeine is a diuretic. This means that if you don’t have a cup of water for every cup of tea or coffee, you are dehydrated.

One of the causes of infertility that’s commonly seen is anovulation. This means that a month passes without the normal release of an egg from the ovary. The drug of choice used first is a drug that forces the body to release an egg (and often multiple eggs) from the ovary. Yet its use hasn’t been shown to improve pregnancy rates, and it never addresses the cause. Once a woman’s cycle is in balance, there’s no reason she wouldn’t be releasing an egg.

The same is still true of us however. But instead of being tied to daily cycles of time like birds or seasonal times like the livestock, we run our clocks by the month. Although studies are contradictory at this point, many researchers support the idea that women have gotten their periods together at the same time of the month, mainly at the new moon. In Chinese medicine philosophy, the new moon represents the ‘yin’, or the dark, reflective, and spiritual. The full moon is the ‘yang’, the wild, outgoing, sexual. Not surprisingly, this is when ovulation may occur and when fertility is highest.

With the advent of indoor lighting and outdoor light pollution, it’s been easy to forget the lunar calendar. Nevertheless, our body still requires the change of darkness and light at night to place the reproductive cycle appropriately. Not only does sleeping in total darkness increase your levels of melatonin (a super antioxidant and anti-cancer hormone), but when coupled with opening the curtains on the full moon and the day immediately prior and after, gives your body the natural cues it requires. Be sure to unplug or cover all sources of light to make the most melatonin; this includes phones, computers, and digital clocks.

As the days get shorter and colder, our skin is exposed to fewer rays of direct sunlight, and our ability to make Vitamin D therefore drops. This essential ‘vitamin’ is actually a hormone, and it plays many cialisvsviagranow roles in our body, including keeping our immune systems strong.Here in Pennsylvania and even when I was in medical school in Arizona, I never saw a normal vitamin D level on any patient’s bloodwork. According to some of my colleagues, it seems that only the farmers who really are outside a lot have adequate levels. Vitamin D also washes off after you’ve been outside because it takes up to 48 hours to turn from cholesterol into vitamin D on our skin. Be sure you are supplementing with Vitamin D3 to keep your levels adequate through the darker winter. Ask your doctor to test your levels and recommend a dosage appropriate for your laboratory values
