If your Lyme test comes back positive, your doctor may recommend an antibiotic. Doxycycline is the most commonly prescribed antibiotic for adults and adolescents. Due to the life cycle of the Lyme bacteria, however, two weeks of antibiotics is not enough to catch the bacteria in all phases of its life. At least 4-6 weeks of treatment may be necessary.
The Western Blot has traditionally been used to confirm the first (IgM) test if that one is positive. However, it reveals certain important information on its own. Keep in mind that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has criteria for diagnosing Lyme based on the Western Blot. However, scientists for the CDC and others contradict these criteria and it’s not based on science, as you may think. It’s a good idea to check in with someone who is familiar with Lyme disease, and who is a member of the ILADS (International Lyme and Associated Disease Society) who can appropriately read your lab test. If ANY of the bands of the Western Blot come back positive, further testing may be necessary.
If you suspect Lyme disease, your doctor may run a Lyme test. Lyme testing is notoriously inaccurate, however, conventional labs are a good place to start. Your doctor may run a test called IgM. IgM is an antibody that shows up with current or recent infection. Therefore, if your infection has been present for more than a few weeks, this test may be negative. If the test is negative, your doctor may say you don’t have Lyme. It is a good idea to ask for a Western Blot test. This test includes IgM as well as IgG, which is an antibody that shows up with any past infection. Past Lyme infections can become chronic, so this test is very useful.
